Joshua Pankin, MD is a third-year pediatrics resident at Baystate Children's Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts, and will serve as Chief Resident from September 2026 through June 2027.
He earned his MD at the NY State-American Program School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University in 2023, where he served as Class President. Before medical school he earned a BA in Biology, magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania, with 3.5 years of research in the Morrisey and Frank labs on lung development and cardiopulmonary cell lineage. That work appears in Cell Reports, Cell Stem Cell, and PNAS.
His current scholarship focuses on handoff communication, family-centered rounds, and how technology can transform medical education and augment the physician-patient relationship. At Baystate he leads a proof-of-concept study validating AI-based detection of I-PASS elements in verbal pediatric handoffs, in collaboration with Amy Starmer, MD, MPH (Baystate Children's Hospital) and InterSystems, and contributes to a Patient and Family Centered I-PASS sustainability audit three years after implementation. He also builds open-source tooling for clinical informatics, including a pediatric handoff PHI-removal pipeline and a Cerner dot-phrase manager used by residents.
As Chief Resident he plans to expand the program's handoff curriculum, integrate AI-assisted feedback into resident education, and build institutional infrastructure for evidence-based clinical documentation.
He lives in Western Massachusetts with his wife Ruthie and their son, and spends weekends on ceramics and landscape photography.
